Thank you!

Greetings GMA SHRM Members,

It is hard to believe that Memorial Day is just a few short weeks away.  I am always very excited for the unofficial start to the summer season.  There is just something about that joy of knowing that there is so much potential in the months that lie ahead.  I try to savor all that the summer has to offer.  As we move into this great time of the year, please don’t forget to take advantage of all that GMA SHRM has to offer as well.  Our 9th annual Human Capital Conference: HR Unleashed, is just days away!  We are very excited for this great event that is likely to have record attendance.  Early registration rates are still available until May 9th, so please register now.

Also, please don’t forget about our annual golf outing.  Each year, the past president of GMA SHRM leads our philanthropic efforts, and the golf outing is a fundraiser to support our community partner.   This year and next, we will be supporting Reach-A-Child. They provide children’s books to officers and first responders for children that they see at the scene of an accident, fire, domestic disturbance or in other traumatic situations. It is a charity founded locally here in Madison, but growing to serve communities nationwide.  Please consider bringing a foursome and maybe even sponsoring a hole.  For anyone who has participated in golf outings, you will realize it's by far one of the most reasonably priced outings in the area. Also, I promise you do NOT need to be a good golfer – just ask my foursome from last year. Melissa Versnik and her committee are working hard to plan this fun summer event, and it will be held Friday, June 6th at The Oaks.

Although programming is one of our main member benefits, there are several others. One at the top of many members’ wish lists is the GMA SHRM Compensation Survey.  We are excited to announce the survey is back.  We are thrilled to be partnering with QTI Consulting for the survey.  This new and improved resource will analyze more than 260 positions locally across multiple industries.  Participation is now open, and the deadline to complete the survey is Friday, May 30th!  You do not need to be a GMA SHRM member to participate.  There is more information provided below.

As always, I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events.  Enjoy the start of the summer season.

Government Affairs

Government Affairs Meeting with Representative Amy Loudenbeck
Contributed by Tammy L. Wacek, Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation

In an effort to build relationships with local legislators, the Government Affairs Committee held a meeting with Representative Amy Loudenbeck on Wednesday, April 16th, 2014. The purpose of the meeting was to inform her about GMA SHRM and find out how we can be a resource for local legislators. We would like to share a couple takeaways from that meeting.

Rep. Loudenbeck recommends you find out who your legislator is and contact them. It is very simple. Go to http://legis.wisconsin.gov/Pages/default.aspx and click on “Who Represents Me?” You can search using your street address or look up the district maps. You can also use this website to set up email notifications with updates on legislation. Rep. Loudenbeck would also like to see Human Resources Professionals at hearings about employer related legislation. This is a great way for legislators to hear directly from us how changes impact the businesses we work for. They may have little knowledge of the impact without hearing from experts on those topics.

We understand everyone is busy and it may be hard to keep up on pending legislation and things going on at the Capitol. Our GMA SHRM Government Affairs Committee would like to be your resource! We are putting together a mailing list for those members interested in being notified about hearings on current legislation. We also plan to schedule more meetings with local legislators in the future and welcome interested members to attend with us. If you are interested in being part of our Government Affairs mailing list, please notify Tammy Wacek at tammy.wacek@wpsic.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Compensation and Benefits

Recording Hours for Exempt Employees
Contributed by Tammy L. Wacek, Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation

In the past, Wisconsin employers were required to keep records of hours of employment of their employees, even exempt employees. This changed when Assembly Bill 712 was enacted into law in April. The bill provides that an employer no longer needs to keep a record of the hours worked by employees who are not paid at an hourly rate.

Employee Relations

Social Media Protections
Contributed by Tammy L. Wacek, Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation

Governor Walker signed Wisconsin Act 208 in April. This restricts employers from requiring an employee or applicant to provide access information for their personal internet accounts. Employers may not discharge a current employee or refuse to hire an applicant for refusing to grant access to or allow observation of their personal internet account. This does not restrict employers from viewing or using information that they can obtain through the public domain. This also does not apply to internet accounts that are provided by the employer or used for the employer’s business purposes. Employers are also permitted to require disclosure of access information for an electronic communications device supplied or paid for by the employer.

Topic: Roundtable – Change Management

Change is occurring at an incredible pace in organizations today. The sheer quantity of changes is increasing, and changes are happening more frequently and faster than ever before. With such large amounts of change happening, organizations need a better and more structured way to manage the individuals in the organization impacted by all of these changes. That’s why change management as a competency has grown tremendously over the last five years. Organizations need to manage the human side of change more effectively than they have in the past.

During this roundtable the group will discuss:
  • The concepts of change management
  • The importance of effective executive sponsorship
  • A simple, practical model to help you deliver effective change
  • How to engage the middle manager level to increase your success rate with change

As an HR leader in your organization, this is one session you don’t want to miss!  Discuss tools and techniques you can immediately apply back on the job.

Topic: Strategic Summit – The Essence of Strategy: Getting to the Heart of Getting Things Done
Location:  The Alliant Energy Center

Despite having “SMART” goals and consistent strategies, even the most motivated and dedicated individuals can have a hard time staying focused and make consistent progress on tasks and overall strategies. This is due in large part in failing to understand the true essence of strategy and to use that understanding as a starting point in strategy development. In this inspiring and practical presentation, our presenter teaches how to step back and examine your strategy development process to get to the heart of what really drives consistent achievement.

GMA SHRM Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Karla King

How long have you been volunteering with GMA SHRM?
I’ve been volunteering on Committees since 2009.

What committee are you volunteering with? Have you volunteered on other committees? If yes, which one?
In 2009 I joined the Membership and Programming Committees to dive right in. Not long after taking on Chair role on the Programming Committee I decided to only volunteer on the Programming Committee. Experience on both committees was very beneficial because they really work very closely together. I am currently the VP of Programming.

What do you enjoy about volunteering?
I’ve enjoyed getting to know and work with other HR professionals in the community. It’s a great way to build a network to learn from and share with outside your organization.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with GMA SHRM?
I highly recommend it of course! Volunteering on a committee definitely helps you to maximize your GMA SHRM experience. GMA SHRM has so much to offer but if you’re not involved you’re definitely missing out! I’m looking forward to meeting you and encourage you to be my guest at a future Programming Committee meeting.

What have you gotten back from volunteering with GMA SHRM?
Volunteering has helped me to expand my horizons and personal development by getting exposure to work on impactful projects and initiatives outside of my organization. It also gives me a great sense of accomplishment to know I’m part of helping other HR professionals with their own personal and professional development through Programming and the advancement of GMA SHRM as a whole.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
