Greetings GMA SHRM Members –

It is hard to believe Labor Day has passed and fall has almost arrived. It’s hard to believe school is starting again, we’re entering the final months of 2017, and all things pumpkin are returning to my Facebook feed.  We have some great events coming up in September, October and November, so be sure to watch for eblasts, newsletters and LinkedIn and Facebook posts so that you don’t miss out on registration.

  • September 19 – our next PDS will be at the Alliant Energy Center.  We have two great topics – “Wellness programs - How to create one that works” and “Why We Need to Talk about Mental Illness in the Workplace”.
  • October 11 – 13 - WISHRM State Conference will be held at the Kalahari October 11-13 and also offers great programing, networking with professionals across the state and most of all – fun!
  • October 26 - Our bi-annual Member Revealed event will be held at the Coliseum Bar.  This jeopardy style event allows new and current members to learn more about GMA, the committees and volunteer opportunities we have available, and general information about our board of directors and chapter. There is no pressure to sign up to start volunteering – it’s another great opportunity to network with members and to learn more.
  • November 14 – our always popular Legal and Government Affairs PDS! Registration will open soon – this is always a highly attended event on the state of current affairs, new legislation, and legal issues to be aware of in the workplace.
We had our first combined Networking & Volunteer / Member appreciation event in August.  This Casino style event offered the opportunity to play (or learn to play) Blackjack, Craps, and Roulette, network with members and to recognize a few of our fantastic volunteers and members.  Those in attendance had a great time and we look forward to growing this event in the future.

Enjoy the first days of fall and I look forward to seeing you at one of our great events over the next few months!  As always, please feel free to call or email with any feedback on the chapter or any question that may be on your mind –

Best Wishes,

Melissa Chadwick

Government Affairs & Legal Updates

Wisconsin REINS Act is Signed Into State Law

Submitted by:  Jeff Palkowski, Director of Government Affairs GMA SHRM and SHRM Advocacy Captain (Wisconsin 1st CD)

Governor Scott Walker signed the Wisconsin Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act (REINS) into law on August 9, 2017.  The REINS Act aims to limit the growth of state regulations by requiring the Wisconsin State Legislature to review and give final approval of any regulations that imposes an economic impact of $10 million or more over a two-year period.  A similar bill at the Federal level has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is pending in the U.S. Senate.

In summary, the act:  Provides for more public input during an agency’s administrative rule writing process; Requires legislation to authorize any administrative rule with compliance and implementation costs of $10 million or more over a two-year period; and allows the Joint Committee for the Review of Administrative Rules (JCRAR) to indefinitely suspend promulgation of a proposed rule for any reasons specified in state statute.

It remains to be seen how the WI REINS Act will impact any future rules or regulations that state agencies may propose which affect human resources related issues however, this may provide employers and individuals with more input to affect the state rule making process that may impact their organizations.

Human Capital Conference Committee

Submitted by: Dana Denny, Director of Human Capital Conference Committee

I’m Dana Denny, the 2017-2018 Director of Human Capital Conference Committee (HCC), which officially began work starting July 1. Please allow me to introduce myself, our committee, and tell you how you can get involved!

My background includes over 20 years in public Human Resources, focused in public sector compensation. I have spent the majority of my professional career working for the State of Wisconsin. GMA-SHRM and HCC have provided an environment and opportunity to focus on this area and truly make a difference. I have participated on HCC as a Committee Member for several years and this year decided to take on a leadership role.

In the past, committee members have done a phenomenal job selecting keynote and breakout speakers, providing valuable sponsorship contacts, and developing conference content for the Human Capital Conference, an extremely successful annual event held each spring at the Alliant Energy Center. In the past, HCC has hosted such nationally known keynote speakers as Dave Ullrich, Cy Wakeman of Reality-Based Leadership, and Carole Grannis and Cyndi Maher of Leading Edge Consulting. I am honored to volunteer for a committee that brings our Chapter such high visibility and value to our membership.

We are just starting to plan the Human Capital Conference for 2017-2018 - if you would like to learn more or join our committee, consider attending our next meeting:

  • Thursday, September 14th 8:30 am – 10:00 AM at Chapter Admin Offices, 2820 Walton Commons Drive, Suite 103, – or by conference call
This meeting will focus on reviewing 2018 HCC keynote speaker possibilities.

If you would like to get involved with the HCC, please contact me

Workforce Readiness & Diversity

Workforce Readiness Committe

Submitted by:  Jon Stinemetz, Director of Workforce Readiness

We are excited to report that we had 12 volunteers assist at the Dane County Regional Job Fair on August 16th.  Those involved reported feeling happy about the value they added to the job seeker's experience.  Resume reviews, mini-mock interviews and interviewing tips were among the skills shared with over 900 attendees that day.  Not only was this an opportunity to feel great about contributing but really gave volunteers a chance to use their knowledge, education and experience to help people in a new, high energy environment in real-time.

As a committee we also reviewed and categorized documents for the Job Readiness Fair put on by the United Way on August 24th.  The documents were distributed via flash drive (donated by the Dane County Job Center).

If you know of events coming up that support gaining or maintaining employment, please let us know.

We are looking for additional committee members!  This is a high impact, low maintenance commitment that is flexible given the variety of schedules represented.  If you are interested in networking while giving back to the community and having a good time while you are at it, please reach out!

FutureQuest 2017

Produced by the Dane County School Consortium and the Madison Metropolitan School District, FutureQuest 2017 will be held December 6, 2017 at the Alliant Energy Center.   FutureQuest will provide approximately 5,300 middle school students with an opportunity to relate their current interests to future education and career opportunities found within 16 career clusters. Students who attend this event will be better prepared to choose high school classes that relate to their interests and strengths.

Unlike a job fair, YOU can help students explore their options by facilitating hands on activities and responding to questions regarding required preparation and training needed for entry into your industry while offering advice on the joys and challenges of your profession.

Why participate?
Your participation in this event will expose you as a representative of your industry and bring your profession to the forefront in the minds of middle school students.

What is your role?
You will speak to middle school students that come to your exhibit about what you do, why you are interested in your field, how someone would prepare for your career, and the types of positions available within your organization.

You will answer questions such as:

  • What high school courses were essential in helping you learn about your areas of interest?
  • What education and career path did you follow?
  • How should students prepare for future opportunities?
  • Tell me about your career and how you got interested in the field?

How to Plan for Workplace Electric Vehicle Charging

Submitted by:  Debbie Branson, New Market Manager, MG&E

At GE Healthcare in Madison, more than 80% of surveyed employees thought it was a good idea to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for employees.  Many other businesses, including American Family, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Sub-Zero Wolf, have seen the same level of enthusiasm for workplace charging.  And all three organizations now have on-site EV charging. With the sales of electric vehicles on the rise – about 36% more sold in 2017 compared to 2016 –anticipate more employees to ask about charging at work.

Workplace charging is a great way to recruit and retain employees.  It can also help companies achieve their sustainability goals and demonstrate to employees, customers and the community that they are committed to clean environment initiatives.

MGE is available to help businesses evaluate workplace charging options.  MGE has coached other businesses on best practices and potential pitfalls of the charging station installations.  They can provide guidance on employee surveys, station procurement and location, and future administration of the stations.

To launch a successful program, MGE recommends you:

  • Get input from critical areas including legal, facilities and your company’s sustainability team.
  • Conduct an employee survey to learn more about interest in EVs and installing stations for employee use.
  • Address concerns regarding when employees charge and how much it costs.  In most cases, increased costs from the charger are nominal.
If you have questions on workplace charging, please call Debbie Branson, New Market Manager - Madison Gas and Electric, at 608-252-5632 or send an email to dbranson@mge.com.  Also check out another great resource —MGE’s workplace employer’s guide.

Volunteer Recognition Award Winners 201

Submitted by: Tammy Wacek, President Elect

GMA SHRM started new volunteer recognition awards in 2017 to thank our members that have made a significant impact to our organization. We are fortunate to have so many volunteers that take time out of their busy schedules to give back to the Chapter. Without them, we would not be able to provide the wonderful programming and communications that support the Human Resources profession. We have three award categories and we are pleased to announce the 2017 winners of those awards!!

GMA SHRM Rising Star award  -  This award is intended for a volunteer who has been volunteering less than 2 years with the chapter and has made a big impact on GMA SHRM.

Alicia Foulker
Alicia was very involved with Student Night out and took this event from a small event on UW Madison’s campus and evolved it into a large, engaging event with keynote speakers and panelists.

Clara Tavarez
Clara was involved with our annual Human Capital Conference in May. She recently took over as newsletter chair for GMA SHRM which is a big undertaking and a monthly responsibility. Clara has been willing to jump in and lend a hand on multiple committees.

GMA SHRM Champion award  -  This award is given to a volunteer who has been volunteering for 5+ years and is someone GMA SHRM has always been able to count on to help where needed.  They are committed to the chapter and the greater Madison HR community.

Kathy Wright
Kathy has been involved with GMA for several years and has volunteered on nearly every committee.  Though she has a demanding day job, she always finds time to support any initiative the committee has and dedicates herself to the activity.

GMA SHRM Ambassador award  -  This award is for a volunteer or member who has been with GMA SHRM for 3+ years and has always spoken highly of GMA SHRM and is always advocating to the greater Madison Community about our chapter and what we offer.

Cory Erickson
Cory is not only a gold sponsor for GMA SHRM, but a great senior leader, mentor and friend to many of our members.  He volunteers with GMA SHRM, as well as other organizations in the community, attends nearly every event and is a great ambassador for our chapter.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
