Formerly known as the Wednesday In The Park, the new “My GMA SHRM Toolbox” sessions are geared to provide HR professionals at all levels an opportunity to further their learning in the core areas of Human Resources. The Toolbox session is meant to be a facilitated & interactive discussion to assist in this learning experience.
You know the drill: as your company’s date for completing the annual performance reviews rapidly approaches, your managers beg you to help them prepare for what they expect to be a challenging review. You do what you can and offer guidance on documenting performance, analyzing performance problems, and developing possible performance goals . . . but it all seems a bit too late. In far too many situations an entire year has gone by without the manager actually discussing performance with his or her direct reports, leading to intense effort at the end of the process to figure out what to do. There is, however, an alternative approach — one that is far more likely to lead to effective performance management. By developing a performance management system that involves a series of performance coaching conversations throughout the year, HR can help create a new approach that sets clear expectations for the manager’s performance management role not only in conducting the review but in actively coaching performance throughout the year. HR has the ability to play a pivotal role in helping managers better understand and enact this new performance coaching relationship.
Specific topics to be explored in this HR Toolbox session include:
Establishing a framework for performance management and the role of the manager as coach within this framework
Guiding managers in developing employee ownership for performance results
Structuring the Performance Coaching Conversations between the manager and his or her direct reports
HR strategies for coaching the coach
Bonus Tool: HR Tipsheet on Supporting Performance Coaches
Bonus Tool: Nine-Plus-One Checklist for Diagnosing Performance Problems
Attend our April HR Toolbox session to learn how to transform the often dreaded performance review into a truly year-round performance coaching process. The facilitator will share excerpts and tools from his latest book, Ultimate Performance Management (ASTD Press, 2009).
