50 Years to Here … but 50 Years to Where ?

What Is Human Resources in 50 Years?

Where is it going? Why should it EVER “get a seat at the table”?

What were we doing 50 years ago? Did we REALLY wear polyester leisure suits as we merrily hired and fired and wrote policies and job descriptions and organized picnics? Will we ever have to worry about running out of acronyms? Will ADA ever fulfill her relationship with CRA? Will the word “union” ever stop striking fear into the hearts and minds of our managers? Has our “Search For Excellence” in our “Quality Improvement” made us “First Break All the Rules” and brought new meaning to our “Thriving on Chaos”? Will anyone ever know what a “Strategic Business Partner” really means? Where is that elusive seat at the table we’ve eternally been looking for? Will the CEO ever know who we are, and will the Finance guys ever stop picking on us?

Human Resource “Elder” Bill Schrum will take us on a guided tour of the last 50 years in the life of Human Resource Management as it grew from Personnel Administration into the body of work that it is today. He will then draw on those times, and his own 32 years of living, breathing and working with human resources around the U.S. and the world, to give us some ideas and thoughts about where we might be going. And, YES, in spite of it all, he will prove that we have come a “long way, baby”.

Bill’s mantra is a simple one: "The true mission of Human Resources is not to create rules, policies, regulations or other barriers. Our mission is to build bridges and open gates, to find ways to get things done, to facilitate the accomplishment of the organization's mission." That won’t change IF we want to be here in 50 years. Bill will cause you to reflect on HR in the media, in practice, and in your own perceptions. You will come to realize the characteristics of “traditional” and “progressive” HR departments, and why the traditional model of Human Resource management will not survive. You will see how some HR departments have transitioned their work to create new communications, establish new partnerships, develop their talent, and improve bottom line outcomes enough to impress even the most notorious counters of beans.

This morning will give you the opportunity to have some fun, gain knowledge and come away with some adoptable strategies for making your job a place you actually look forward to going to every day.

The Energy Bus

10 Rules to Fuel your Life, Work and Team with Positive Energy

Studies suggest that 3 out of 4 people wish they had more energy... not just more physical energy but more mental energy to deal with stress, obstacles, and the daily responsibilities of life and work. Many would even agree to work for less if they felt a more positive experience within their job. Clearly there is a huge gap between the results people are expected to deliver and the energy they posses to make it happen. The goal of this program is to close this gap by enhancing energy, performance, productivity and team success.

Why energy? A person without energy is like a car without gas. It doesn’t work without it. Energy is essential for overcoming adversity and rejection, physical endurance, positive thinking, contagious enthusiasm and inspired customer service.

Based on principles from his new best selling book, The Energy Bus, Jon Gordon presents a powerful roadmap to overcome common life and career obstacles and bring out the best in yourself and your team. Everyone faces challenges. And every person, organization, company and team will have to overcome negativity and adversity to define themselves and create their success. No one goes through life untested and the answer to these tests is positive energy—the kind of positive energy consisting of vision, trust, optimism, enthusiasm, purpose, and spirit that defines great leaders and their teams.

Drawing upon his experience and work with thousands of leaders, sales professionals, teams, non-profit organizations, schools, and athletes, Jon shares inspirational stories, actionable strategies, the latest research in positive psychology and emotional intelligence, and 10 rules to fuel your life, work and team with positive energy.

Whether you feel that your gas tank is empty, maybe just stuck with a flat tire, lost direction, or you're ready to drive you and your team with more purpose and positive energy, Jon will inspire you to create more success and enjoy the ride of your life!

Benefits include:

  • Renewed enthusiasm, spirit and purpose.
  • Solutions to refocus and re-energize yourself as a leader and team.
  • The scientific benefits of positive thinking and it’s impact on your health, wealth and happiness.
  • Strategies to overcome fatigue, stress and negativity.
  • Strategies to get your team (work team, sports team, church team, family team) on the bus and moving in the right direction.
  • A simple way to deal with Energy Vampires at work and home.
  • Physical strategies to enhance energy and performance.

Bridging the Pay-For-Performance Gap

Presenters: Rich Sperling & Dana Martin, The Hay Group

Professional Development Track

Few activities can more strongly align employee behavior with business objectives than an effective performance management process.  However, its inherent complexities and sensitivities have led many organizations to search for a "silver bullet" for addressing the challenges of managing individual, unit, and corporate performance.  Through decades of consulting experience and extensive research – including our work with the Fortune World's Most Admired Companies – we have identified the essential elements of virtually all successful performance management programs.

These include:

  • Creating Clarity Around Goals
  • Building a Culture of Dialogue
  • Establishing a System of Truly Differentiated Rewards

These elements are interconnected.  Performance management systems and processes depend on clarity and commitment from the leaders in an organization.  Candid and frequent dialogue on performance lets employees know where they stand and builds a foundation for improvement.  Differentiated rewards should reinforce behaviors associated with organizational and job-related objectives, motivate employees to achieve outstanding performance in their jobs, and recognize outstanding performers in a meaningful way.

What Makes the Most Admired Companies Great: A Formula for Success

Presenter: Mark Royal, The Hay Group

Leadership Development Track

The Hay Group has partnered with Fortune magazine since 1997 to identify the World's and America's Most Admired Companies.  Along with producing the Most Admired rankings, they also conduct follow-up research each year to identify the business practices that make the Most Admired Companies both highly regarded and highly successful.   Their findings provide metrics that can be used by all companies, regardless of size or industry, to assess their progress in achieving best-in-class levels. HR professionals have influence over the majority of the factors we have found that differentiate Most Admired Companies from others. Their results also point to the critical role HR plays in helping a company become a corporate reputation leader.

Organizational Culture
Leadership Development
Performance Management
Strategy Implementation

The Ten Demandments: Rules to Live by in the Age of the Demanding Candidate

Presenter: Jill Schwieters, Pinstripe

Professional Development Track

An economy ruled by intellectual assets, a severe talent shortage and a technology-driven power shift have led to the age of the (very) demanding candidate. Old recruiting rules no longer apply in a candidate-centric world. Taking inspiration from Kelly Mooney’s book “The Ten Demandments: Rules to Live by in the Age of the Demanding Consumer”, Pinstripe’s most senior executives take ownership of the candidate-as-consumer concept by presenting ten proven and powerful rules for attracting and keeping today’s most talented employees. The guiding principle: delivering a great candidate experience is about a targeted marketing message, a candidate-centric approach to the recruitment process, and a continuous cultivation of long term relationships with candidates.

Session Benefits:

  • Provides an engaging and clear framework for building and sustaining relationships with talented candidates and employees
  • Provides specific examples of each Demandment being successfully – and unsuccessfully -- deployed, at companies attendees will know well
  • Special attention given to the organization’s Career Website, with tips that can be implemented immediately
  • Provides a business case for changes requiring more extensive change or investment
