With 3 years under your belt since the most recent COBRA updates, this may have become an issue that has fallen off your radar.  The September Chapter Meeting will give you an opportunity to revisit the basics of COBRA to refine your knowledge of the topic and how to work through those tough issues.

During the morning announcements members will be asked to ratify changes to the GMA SHRM by-laws to allow electronic voting.

Workshop Part I: COBRA 101
Presented by Adam Jensen with Virchow Krause

COBRA-101 will examine a wide variety of basic-level COBRA topics:

  • Who is covered?

  • What's a Qualified Beneficiary? 

  • What are the 18, 29, and 36 month Qualifying Events? 

  • What does and doesn't trigger a Qualifiying Event? 

  • What types of plans are covered by COBRA, what types of plans are not? 

  • What notices are required?  What are the notice timelines? 

  • What are employee and dependent duties?

  • How do I handle billings, delinquencies, and short payments?

  • How often can I change my COBRA rates?

  • What terminates COBRA?

  • What issues are involved with Gross Misconduct?

  • What about open enrollment?

  • What about Medicare and COBRA?

  • What about FLMA and COBRA?

  • What are some common mistakes?

 

 

Workshop Part II: COBRA - Getting Through the Tough Issues
Presented by Gail Olsen with Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, s.c.

Now that you have the COBRA basics, let’s deal with some real life issues! This workshop will provide a practical, hands-on approach to COBRA administration. The program will be devoted to working through COBRA fact scenarios, providing participants the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice immediately. Do not miss this rare opportunity to walk through the tough COBRA issues with an experienced COBRA attorney! Participants are encouraged to bring their questions.

Our Presenters

 

Adam Jensen JD, CEBS, FLMI

Adam P. Jensen, Senior Consultant with Virchow Krause Employee Benefits, LLC, has worked in the insurance and employee benefits industry since 1986. Adam specializes in providing regulatory compliance and plan design services for health and welfare plans and qualified retirement plans. He also advises executive clients on non-qualified deferred compensation issues. Prior to joining Virchow Krause Employee Benefits, Adam was a manager in the human capital practice of a Big Four accounting firm and has also served as an in-house ERISA attorney for a well-known national financial and retirement plan services firm. Adam leads Virchow Krause Employee Benefits’ Regulatory Compliance resource management team. He is the co-leader of the Tribal Practice Group, and is a member of the firm’s International Employee Benefits Practice Group.

 

 

Gail Olsen

The presenter, Gail Olsen, is a shareholder in the employee benefits department of Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, s.c. Gail works with a wide range of clients to develop practical and financially feasible health plan options and helps clients preempt and resolve problems related to health and welfare plans, employee claims, and compliance issues. Prior to joining Reinhart, Gail acquired several years of experience in private practice in a management labor firm, with an emphasis on employee benefits. Before becoming an attorney, Gail worked for a decade in the health insurance industry. Gail is a sought after speaker for groups such as the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Specialists, and local chapters of SHRM. She received her law degree, magna cum laude, from Marquette University.
