Program Details:
The
Jobs Revolution and You
"We
need to prepare for an American job market in which there
are too many openings and not enough skilled workers to fill
them America has four, maybe six years in which to radically
revamp its fundamental assumptions about workforce development
and then to act." With that clarion call, workforce expert
Steve Gunderson takes aim at what he calls "the jobs
revolution" -- the employment, educational and economic
challenges that America, Wisconsin and the Madison area must
address, to stay competitive in the global marketplace. A
veteran of 16 years in the U.S. Congress representing western
Wisconsin, Gunderson is co-author of The Jobs Revolution:
Changing How America Works, and senior consultant with The
Greystone Group, Inc., in Washington, D.C.
Terry Ludeman will co-present and bring a local focus to this
workshop, sharing his expertise and knowledge about the Wisconsin,
Dane County, and Madison labor market.
Wisconsin's
Approaching Workforce Changes
The presentation given by Terry Ludeman will examine recent
developments in Wisconsin's labor markets and will discuss
pending developments and trends, both short-term and long-term.
The discussion will include a view of Wisconsin's very diverse
industry makeup and the importance of that diversity.
Changes
in the demand and supply of labor will be discussed with emphasis
on demographic changes and economic changes, past, present
and future. The demand for workers and structural changes
in industry makeup will be examined. The supply of labor will
also be examined, with particular emphasis on pending developments,
including an aging baby boom generation, the brain drain,
and a sagging birth rate.
