Is
There Such A Thing As Workplace Privacy?
Today's
electronic workplace creates challenges for employers. The
access given employees to electronic systems increases productivity,
as well as the opportunity for abuse. This workshop will review
the basis for privacy rights in the workplace and suggest
ways that employers can monitor activities in the workplace
without violating their employees' rights. We will also touch
on the employers' obligations to protect confidential employee
information.
Attendees
will learn:
- about
the myriad of laws providing employees with privacy rights
in the workplace.
- what employers may do to manage their workplace;
- when it's permissible to listen to voicemail;
- when it's permissible to search employee e-mail;
- when it's permissible to search employee possessions or
lockers;
- what policies an employer should adopt;
- when it's appropriate to regulate off-duty conduct;
- what measures employers can take to prevent identity theft.
