Mike Saraille - Extreme Ownership: Combat Leadership for Business and Life

A true leader takes 100% ownership of everything in their domain, including the outcome and everything that affects it. This is the most fundamental building block of leadership that cuts across all other principles. It applies to leadership at any level, in any organization.

The laws of combat were learned on the battlefield of Ramadi, but they apply everywhere. Whether in business, personal, or life implementing the four laws of combat are required to succeed.

  • Cover and Move,
  • Simple,
  • Prioritize and Execute, and
  • Decentralized Command:
These are the laws that lead to winning!

1-A Mastering the Art of Delegation, Jeffrey Russell, Russell Consulting, Inc.

Everyone likes to be on a winning team!  It motivates, it inspires and it can catapult you to new levels of productivity and success!  However, not everyone knows what it takes to make a winning team (or what to do with a legacy team).  This program is guaranteed to help your leaders understand and implement the 3 core essential elements to creating and maintaining a winning team…plus it’s fun and VERY interactive!

1-B  You Can’t Say That! Strategies to master diversity in a new decade, Liz Nead

It can sometimes feel, no matter where you turn, you are offending someone. So much so, we now ask the “offended” to lighten up and not take us so seriously. It’s clear our words have power and it’s also become apparent we aren’t always sure how to use this instrument for good.

In her presentation,  "You can’t say that.” Liz shares ten things we say that widen the diversity gap. Even with the best of intentions to connect, these statements make it harder to gain common ground and can cause irreparable harm to others personally and professionally.

Prepare yourself for bold humor and disarming dialogue as Liz gives you tools to become more effective in your communication with others and face the fears of saying the wrong thing. She equips you with five essential strategies to handle complex and diverse situations and important language to create connection under pressure.

Takeaways

  • Positive insights into the WHY’S behind the WHAT NOT TO SAY.
  • How to create a healthy space for curiosity around diversity.
  • Valuable tools to investigate other cultures without offending.
  • Simple language to diffuse difficult situations.

1-C Reconnecting to our Center: Staying Grounded When the Ground Feels Shaky,  Sarah Young, Zing Collaborative

It's easy to feel grounded and steady when we're having a great day, when our meeting goes better than we thought it would, when we get great feedback from our leader, or when we have a light day with very few meetings.

But how can we stay grounded and steady when the ground beneath us feels shaky?

  • When we're running to back-to-back meetings, without a moment to eat lunch (or even use the restroom)?
  • When we are working on high-stakes, confidential employee issues?
  • When we are pulled in "as HR" to incredibly tricky and/or heated conversations?
  • When we attempt to share feedback with a team member, or coach a leader within our organization, and the person gets defensive or angry?
  • When we feel uncertain about our place, our path, or our performance - especially when we're supposed to have the answers to these things as someone working in HR?

To lead most effectively at any level of our organizations, our opportunity is to stay grounded and connected to our center, even when the ground beneath us feels shaky (or, let's be serious - sometimes, like it's crumbling right under our feet).

During this interactive session, we'll explore ways to build and replenish our inner reserves, both proactively and in difficult moments, in service of acting in integrity, building strong relationships, and having the type of impact that we desire. You'll leave with concrete strategies and tools to apply back in the 'real world' and to your role as an HR professional - and perhaps feeling just a little bit lighter than when you walked into the room.

Afternoon Keynote

Mike Saraille -  Dichotomy of Leadership - The Mindsets for Victory and Balancing Dichotomies

Effective leaders take extreme ownership, but are not extreme in their attitudes or actions. They balance the forces that pull them in opposite directions.

The Mindsets for Victory and Balancing Dichotomies  -  The key to effective leadership is balance. Leaders will constantly be faced with opposing forces that must be balanced in order to succeed.

We discuss how to identify and constantly make adjustments to those opposing forces to lead every member of your team effectively.

2-A Employment Brand – Take Control of Your NarrativeSummer Rector

According to Plato, “Those who tell the story run the world.”  Employment brand is how we as employers tell our story to employees and candidates, and it’s one of the greatest influencers over our ability to attract and retain talent.  Yet how many of us have a proactive, defined strategy as to how to manage it?

Come and learn the why, who, what, when, and where to successfully manage your employment brand in this competitive landscape.

Participants will learn:

  • Learn the importance of taking control of your employment brand
  • Learn what it takes to have a strong employment brand
  • Learn actionable employment brand strategies that your organization can adopt to better attract and retain talent

2-B  Lights, Action, Inclusion - Be the Director of Your Vision,  Phil Martin, PJM

At its heart, business is about people: the employees you work with and the customers you serve. So is theater.

A theater director (Human Resources) constantly works at casting the right characters and bringing out the very best in their designers, technicians, and actors, who will in turn give that to their audience.

In his ‘theatrical’ presentation, Phil unravels the process that theater directors follow when producing a play; from their very first production concept, through casting, rehearsal, and culminating in the final performance. How do directors build their vision? How do directors get actors to be willing to fail and then try again—only better? How do they get a cast of talented individuals to live and breathe as one? Phil pulls back the curtain and shares his 35 years of experience: and more.
