Thank you!

Greetings,

It’s the time of year to give thanks, reflect on the past year, and spend time with family and friends.  As President and board member of GMA SHRM, I have a lot to be thankful for.  Thank you to the many volunteers, board members, and chapter management, who make GMA one of the top SHRM chapters in the country!  The time and commitment each of you invests always impresses me.  The chapter would not be what it is without your engagement.  Additionally, GMA SHRM would not be able to do what it does without our partners.  Thank you to all of our 2013 partners.  Your partnership is critically important to our organization, and I want to make sure all of our members recognize that.  Thank you to each organization:

Now for that reflecting.  As you look back at 2013, were you able to meet your professional goals?  Was GMA SHRM a part of any of those?  Perhaps you joined the study group for your PHR or SPHR, or you got those strategic credits at some of our programming events, or stepped outside your comfort zone and attended our networking events? Whatever your 2013 goals were, I hope you find value and utilize all that the chapter has to offer.  If you weren’t able to in 2013, 2014 is right around the corner and we have an exciting year ahead.  I’ll share more in our January newsletter, but start brainstorming now, setting those goals, and let us know if we can do more to help you achieve them.

Finally the important part, enjoy the time with your family and friends over the holiday season!

Warmly,

Jake Siudzinski
GMA SHRM President

The Healthcare Resource Group – Looking for Industry HR Leaders

We are currently looking for new volunteer leaders from the industry to facilitate the group in 2014. Unfortunately, the initial leaders/co-facilitators no longer work in the industry so to ensure the future success of this Healthcare focused group it is best to find new leaders with a vested interest. The group has been meeting almost monthly going on two years now. The new facilitator(s) will manage the group by coordinating meetings and member information sharing, etc. Time commitment is very minimal, so it’s a great way to step into volunteering with GMA SHRM!

For those not familiar with this group, this is a Madison area network of trusted peer advisors, who together explore some of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by being an HR practitioner in the ever-evolving Healthcare industry.

This group provides Healthcare HR practitioners with the opportunity to share knowledge, ideas, strategies and lessons-learned, as well as practical tips, tools, and techniques for an industry with needs and challenges very different than most others.  There are many topics, questions or instances where brainstorming as a group or partnering with other companies comes in handy and can be a great mutual benefit without having to sacrifice any competitive advantages.  This is where colleagues can glean from their peers on best practices that work for their companies, and this is one of our objectives for this group.

For more information about this group follow this link:  http://www.gmashrm.org/index.php?module=cms&page=183

If interested in becoming a facilitator for this unique group please contact:

Karla King, VP Programming

GMA SHRM Upcoming Events

January 21, 2014 - GMA SHRM Strategic Summit
Topic: The Top Five Threats Facing Business and HR’s Role in Leading through Them
Location: The Alliant Energy Center

We are entering a new economy and business model with tremendous potential for success.  However, your business is facing new threats for survival.  You must be able to anticipate, respond and adapt to these threats quickly or risk becoming extinct.  The old economy was embodied by large companies facing limited competition in stable markets.  The new economy is about competition through the entrepreneurial spirit where the fast eats the slow.  The facts point towards five critical threats that all businesses face today.  Find out why the best CEO’s are turning to HR to lead their organizations through these challenges and how you can prepare!

Our speaker, Jack Smalley, provides human resource training and consulting for over 600 Express offices and their clients in the U.S. and Canada.  Jack offers clients extensive leadership guidance from a progressive career as an HR Executive.  His presentation on Business Threats has been described as “riveting, brilliant, inspiring, and uber excellent” by HR professionals across the country.  Jack has presented at 5 national SHRM conferences. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a national speaker without the travel expenses on January 21, 2014 at Alliant Energy Center!

November 19th, Tracy Butz; owner of Think Impact Solutions spoke with the GMA SHRM group attending the November strategic summit. Tracy kept us engaged with her wit and charm and engaged us as participants in learning the steps of how to engage and inspire the workforce.

Engagement is when one chooses to commit extra effort, time and mental energy to actively and willingly contribute to an organizations’ success, using their head, heart and hands.

We learned that there are 10 key components of an Effective Engagement Strategy. In most organizations, only 2 out of 10 people are required to complete tasks that play to their strengths. To understand engagement, workplace strength surveys are the best way to measure the current state of your organizations, job satisfaction, supervisor’s effectiveness, level of engagement, in addition to ones commitment to the organization. Tracy provided us with a great baseline of questions we can ask to perform a survey to capture this information within our own organizations.

Once the level of engagement is determined, we can best execute an engagement strategy.  There are 10 steps to be reviewed and then and only then can a Individual Development Process be created to outline SMART goals, goals that are future-oriented, targeting attainment in one to three years.

We then looked into the Factors for Selecting Development Activities and discussed the many forms of the activities such as: Stretch Assignments, Mentoring Relationships, classroom training, project team involvement, formal education and involvement in professional organizations.

As Leaders, Managers, Supervisors and Human Resource Professionals we learned the importance of how an effective engagement strategy and measuring the level of engagement will give us what we need to apply the strategy within the organization.

Name: Tia Gibson

How long have you been volunteering with GMA SHRM?
About two years.

What committee are you volunteering with? Have you volunteered on other committees? If yes, which one?
I volunteer with the Workforce Readiness Committee and I also volunteer with the Marketing & Communications Committee.

Volunteering with the Workforce Readiness committee is very rewarding.  After each mock interview or resume writing workshop, I love being able to hear the gratitude someone has because I helped them, just a little, to prepare them in the real world. It’s such a small fraction of my time, but I always walk away feeling great about what I’ve done.

It’s never too late to join.

What have you gotten back from volunteering with GMA SHRM?
With this volunteer experience I’ve realized that this simple knowledge of how to write a resume or act during an interview isn’t always obvious.  I do my best to share this knowledge with others as much as I can.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
