Thank you!

Greetings,

Greetings GMA SHRM members,

As well-known American author Hal Borland once wrote, “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”  I think we can all certainly agree that it sure felt as if winter was going to last forever this year, but spring and April have in fact finally arrived.  With robins, tulip blossoms, and warmer weather, comes our much anticipated spring conference.  The 9th Annual Human Capital Conference: HR Unleashed is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th at the Alliant Energy Center.  We are very excited about this full day of high quality programming and networking.  Author, futurist, economist and humorist Rebecca Ryan will be delivering a breakout session and keynote, It’s 2030. Where is HR in Your Company.  Author and reverse psychologist Jeff Havens will educate and entertain with his keynote Unleash Your Inner Tyrant.  Formerly with National Public Radio (NPR) and current founder of Amplify Talent, Lars Schmidt, will have two breakouts on Social Media in HR & Talent Engagement and Innovation.  Finally, there are several other breakouts including Legal Updates, Succession Planning, What HR Execs Look for in HR Professionals, Partnering with DWD for Success & more.  Early bird registration is only $125 if you sign up before May 9th!

In looking ahead at other great events, don’t forget to mark your calendars for our HR Roundtables, HR Toolboxes, and our Strategic Summits.  In addition, please join us for the new and improved orientation program, GMA SHRM Revealed on April 24th at 4:30pm to learn more about what is going on with our chapter and for some great after-hours networking.  One final date I wanted to highlight is June 6th for our annual golf outing at The Oaks.  This is earlier in the season this year, and we hope you can make it!

As always, I look forward to seeing many of you at these upcoming events.

Government Affairs

February Toolbox in Review
Contributed by Julia Nieman

Bob Gregg of Boardman & Clark Law Firm was our speaker for the February toolbox and spoke to members regarding background screenings and pre-employment testing.  He discussed criminal records checks, references, and pre-employment testing.

Criminal Records Check - Criminal records checks are an important part of the hiring process, but employers need to use care when conducting checks.  Bob provided the EEOC website (http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/arrest_conviction.cfm) which is a great resource in helping employers understand how convictions should be used when making a hiring decision.  While individuals with a criminal record are not a protected class, there is the potential for disparate impact or treatment of a protected class when disqualifying individuals for a particular conviction.  It is important as HR professionals that we have an understanding of this.

Reference Checks - Bob stressed the importance of reference checks and that as HR professionals, we have a duty to conduct reference checks to ensure that we are hiring qualified individuals as well as ones that will not cause harm to the company or its employees.  We also have a duty when providing references that there is not malicious interference with employment, defamation, not providing false positive information, or providing a negligent reference.  For example, did you know that you can be liable if you failed to disclose information that could have prevented harm at the company obtaining the reference?  Something to think about!

Pre-Employment Testing - There are a variety of “selection procedures” that can be used in the hiring process.  It is important that the validity and reliability of these tests are carefully evaluated to ensure they are a useful and non-discriminatory selection method.  Selection methods can be defended by providing proof of validity and business necessity.  It is also important if you use a testing vendor to ensure that these tests are non-discriminatory.  Even though the testing vendor provides the test, the employer is liable if it is ruled as discriminatory.  It is also important to be careful when using “right fit” tests.  These tests cannot be used if they reveal psychological information such as depression or anxiety.

Thank you to Bob for providing such great information (and some funny stories)!  This session was a great chance for members to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of their role in the background process!

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Survey Data Collection to Open in April

This year the Greater Madison Area Society for Human Resource Management (GMA SHRM) and QTI Consulting, Inc. have partnered to provide the GMA SHRM Compensation Survey.  QTI Consulting works with organizations throughout Wisconsin, designing staff and executive compensation and incentive programs, conducting individual job market pricing, and assisting with compensation administration.

We invite you to participate in the 2014 GMA SHRM Compensation Survey.  This year’s survey will collect local compensation information on more than 260 jobs across multiple industries as well as select pay budget trend information.

Survey data will be collected via an easy-to-use web-based data submission tool that is available 24/7.  The brief time you invest in completing the survey provides an excellent return-- the more organizations participating, the better the results!  All data is kept strictly confidential by QTI Consulting, and all participants will be given a discount on purchased reports.

Data collection is scheduled to begin in April and end Friday, May 30, 2014.

Knowing the Future
Contributed by Rebecca Ryan - Keynote Presenter at the May 13, 2014 Human Capital Conference

As a futurist, some people assume that I predict the future. This is a two-headed myth. First, I don’t predict. I don’t travel with a crystal ball or have magical glasses that give me foresight. Instead, I have learned a suite of tools that enable me to foresee multiple, plausible futures. And that’s the second part of the myth: your future is not a single future. It will be one of several possible futures, depending on external forces (like the strength of the economy) and internal forces (like the quality of your decision-making.)

When we meet at the GMA SHRM Human Capital Conference on May 13, I will teach you some foresight tools and we’ll think together about some of the external forces that will shape our organizations, and HR. Here are a couple ideas to get you thinking…

  • Will religious holidays (PTO) become extinct? With an increasingly multicultural workforce and global employees and partners, American-Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter will become less relevant. Instead, HR policies will flex to enable employees to take their PTO to reflect their individual religious or cultural traditions.
  • How will “the war for talent” change shape? You’ve heard about the “haves and the have not’s.” What’s emerging now in our economy is a giant “middle skills” gap, e.g. technicians who need more than high school but less than a Ph.D.
  • Will drug testing include performance enhancing drugs? College students routinely take productivity enhancing drugs like Ritalin to help them study longer, cram for tests, and pull all-nighters. How will the workplace be impacted by these drugs?
The future is knowable. But it is not a single future; it’s one of many multiple futures. Join me on May 13th in exploring these multiple futures.

About the author: Rebecca Ryan is a futurist and economist who will be our keynote speaker on May 13 at the Human Capital Conference. Contact at: Nextgenerationconsulting.com.

Volunteers Needed – Student SHRM events!

UW Milwaukee will be hosting the 2014 North Central Regional Student Conference April 25-26, 2014.  Again, many opportunities are available and time commitments vary based upon the position.  This is an exciting opportunity for UW Milwaukee and many volunteers will be needed to make the event a success.  More information can be found at www.shrm.org under “conferences” and “student conferences”.

2013-2015 Philanthropic Partner

GMA SHRM has recently partnered with Reach-a-Child (www.reachachild.org) for our 2013-2015 philanthropic partner. Beginning at our January Summit, we will have a bin available for donations of new or gently used children's books for ages 2-12.  They ask that these books have no writing (To Jimmy, Love Grandma, etc.) in them.

Even more than donations of books, Reach-a-Child can use monetary donations.  Many of their expenses are shipping related to get books out to all of the organizations (police departments, EMTs, etc.) that are part of their network.

Reach-a-Child is looking for companies that are interested in setting up corporate giving programs.  Do you have a Friday $5 jeans day? Corporate match program? Please consider RAC! They will feature you in their social media posts, newsletter, come out and take pictures with you of your donations and books that you can use in your PR campaigns, and do whatever they can to help you make your program successful!

If your organization is interested, please contact melissav@payrollcompany.biz to be put in touch with Reach-a-Child.

Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin: Responding to a Maturing Workforce

As the labor supply continues to age and change, a strategic approach to workforce planning is more important than ever. Participants will work with a systems framework to consider workforce-planning strategies to retain, recruit, and reposition members of the workforce as those workers age. These concepts can help leaders retain, recruit, and reposition older workers as near-term solutions. They can also be used to redefine the way work is structured to alleviate the worker shortage, design succession plans, and create a healthier and more productive work system overall.

Subject-matter experts will show how the entire work system (job, technology, physical and social environment, and organizational policies, procedures and culture) impacts employees, and how leaders can make thoughtful, conscious choices for their own organizations. Specifically, the summit will address healthcare benefits, legal guidelines, what people need from work, ergonomics and safety, and education/skill development, all of which impact employers’ ability to attract and retain talent.

Free admission. Food and refreshments provided. Online registration ends April 17, 2014.

Wanted: GMA SHRM Social Media Maven and Technology Director!

Do you love the power of social media? Are you passionate about leveraging technology to strengthen communication and effectiveness? Might you have the skills to help GMA SHRM transform LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and our website into the powerful force they can be to help the local HR community of professionals? If you answered in the affirmative to these questions, then have we a great opportunity for you!

This new Board position will help strengthen our service to GMA SHRM members by enhancing our website and taking the lead role in building our social media capabilities. While we’ll be looking to this position to help lead our technology initiative, this person won’t be alone in helping the Board achieve these goals (individual Board members have responsibilities in these areas and there will be a newly created technology committee to provide support).

Are you intrigued with this opportunity? If so, check out the job description for this new technology director position and send an e-mail expressing your interest to Jeff Russell, GMA SHRM president-elect, no later than April 11th. We look forward to hearing from you!

GMA SHRM Member Spotlight

Name: Natascha Long

Where do you currently work?
Covance.

What is the focus of your position?
HR Business Analyst.

How long have you been in the Human Resource field?
15 years.

Which of your career accomplishments makes you proudest?
I was able to successfully implement an HR application from previous paper based format to electronic. Although this came with its challenges initially, I was able to provide solutions and processes that proved the success of this application. I have also more recently been part of the successful launch of and HR Initiative, and I continue leading the team through day to day operations.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
That you can put your mind to anything and achieve success even if you have been told you won’t succeed. The world is your oyster and it is what you make of it. Never give up giving up.

Why did you decide to join GMA SHRM?
I decided to join GMA SHRM to network with other HR Professionals, and to also further my knowledge within in HR. It’s a great way to learn from others within the same industry, and keep up current within HR.

If you’d like to be published in an issue of HR InTouch, please complete this profile and submit (along with a photo) to Tia Gibson @ tia.gibson@covance.com.

GMA SHRM Volunteer Spotlight

How long have you been volunteering with GMA SHRM?
Six years.

What committee are you volunteering with? Have you volunteered on other committees? If yes, which one?
I have been a member of the GMA SHRM Communications and Marketing Committee for my entire tenure with SHRM; about six years. I have never worked on any other Committees, although I have considered many others because they sounded interesting and I knew other people on them. However, because I have been so interested in many of the Communications and Marketing aspects of SHRM, specifically the Salary Survey, and the Committee’s interests dovetailed with mine so perfectly, I never did check them out and I’m still here! Oh well, there’s still time, I guess… J

What do you enjoy about volunteering?
I really enjoy meeting new people, learning about their work, performing the important work our committee, which is essentially generating excitement for the membership and partners regarding our events, conferences, and professional learning opportunities. Our goals are high but achievable, and I like how our successes have increased over time -- we’ve certainly accomplished a lot since 2008! We have a great group of volunteers and everyone is committed to making a difference.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with GMA SHRM?
Join us! It’s fun! What’s not to like about Human Resources? Especially trying something which isn’t normally part of your “day job” but can be just as rewarding once achieved.

What have you gotten back from volunteering with GMA SHRM?
The laughter, the great friendships and the personal satisfaction of giving back to my profession. Oh, and the doughnuts at our meetings.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
