By Tracey Meek, GMA SHRM President

Dear Colleagues:

The Greater Madison Area SHRM is entering another exciting year of "Advancing the Profession and Serving the Professional." On June 18th, the GMA SHRM Board and many of the Committee Chairs met for a full day session to review the chapter's strategic plan, determine our direction going forward, and what we have accomplished so far. The strategic plan is designed to make GMA SHRM strategically oriented, more nimble, forward-looking, and responsive to the needs of all of its members. As I take on the responsibility of serving as GMA SHRM president with feelings of energy, excitement, awe, and humility, I will work with the volunteer leaders of this organization to achieve a few key goals from our strategic plan.

My first goal is to work on growing our chapter's involvement with the community at large. We have a wonderful Community Committee that is garnering new volunteers and energy to work with the Dane County Job Center and the "SOAR" Program, which is the Success Opportunities Alternative School Program. I believe that through our membership and all of the talents, experience, and skills that we possess as human resources professionals, we have a great deal to offer our community.

The second goal is to take a closer look at our membership and the demographics that make up our chapter. What do you as members' value? Is the current culture and vision in the shape it needs to be to meet your expectations? What does our current member involvement tell us about our chapter? And where can we make improvements and offer more.

Finally, and perhaps of utmost importance, is how is our volunteer and committee structure working? Do our volunteers feel that their time and dedication to GMA SHRM is valued? Can we be more effective in our communications between the members, committees and board? We have wonderful leaders amongst us and they give a great deal of time and energy to the services we provide.

I am honored to serve the members of GMA SHRM as your president and I hope to bring a unique perspective to the position through my experience in the private and public sectors. I welcome your insights and advice as GMA SHRM moves forward in pursuit of excellence in advancing the profession and serving our professionals.

Thank you.
