Monthly Board Article: Introduction of the Chapter's Mission, Vision, and Values
By GMA SHRM Board

As part of our strategic planning process, the leadership team decided to review the chapter's mission, vision, and values statement. A team from the Board of Directors took a collaborative approach and revised the statement this year. The Board and committees will use it to focus efforts, guide decisions, and measure success for the benefit of our members, partners, and employers in the Greater Madison Area.

It's Never Too Soon to Begin Planning for Your Certification

Any GMA SHRM member who would like to learn more about professional certification or is planning to complete the certification exam in the spring 2005 is invited to attend a Certification Orientation meeting on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. We'll meet at Capital Newspapers, 1901 Fish Hatchery Road, Madison. Sign up now for the orientation by contacting Debbie Reed at 608-252-6338 or mdreed@madison.com.

At the orientation you will learn more about the certification process, including which level of certification (PHR or SPHR) may be appropriate for you, application information, and preparation strategies. You'll have the chance to network with fellow GMA SHRM members who plan to take the spring 2005 exam. And you'll meet with a representative from the UW-Madison School of Business, Small Business Development Center, who will be available to provide information about the 12-week SHRM Learning System Course that will be held at Grainger Hall beginning February 2. For more information about the course, see http://www.uwsbdc.org/shrm.htm.

Human Resource Certification is a symbol of professional achievement. The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), as part of the Society of Human Resources Management, maintains a set of nationally recognized standards and body of knowledge set by individuals working in the profession. The PHR or SPHR designation signifies that you have mastered this HR body of knowledge. Check out the HRCI website at http://www.hrci.org/ for more information.

Join the other chapter members who have obtained their PHR or SPHR certification!

Welcome 2005 Corporate Partners!
By Dave Furlan, Marketing Committee member

Please join your GMA SHRM chapter in welcoming our new and renewing Corporate Partners for 2005. The support of these partners allows the chapter to arrange quality speakers at monthly meetings, provide career-building resources for HR professionals, and organize other HR-related activities.

There are several ways for members to get to know our Corporate Partners. The chapter lists the names of Corporate Partners in each monthly newsletter and on the GMA SHRM website. In addition, partners are introduced at monthly meetings, and every partner has a special ribbon attached to his or her nametag at the meetings. The chapter also displays a banner at the monthly meetings with all of the Corporate Partner names. Members can also look for some partners to display materials at meetings or give a short introduction of their services.

So, whether in your daily interactions or as part of attending a program meeting, please take a moment this year to introduce yourself to our partners and thank them for their support. They are a vital part of the ongoing success of our chapter.

Your Foundation at Work: Making a Difference
By Rachel R. Steger, PHR

You know what excellence is. It's people…with talent. People who are dedicated and work hard to continually improve themselves, to be the best they can be. They are able to work with others, to be part of a team and to achieve something bigger than themselves. That's what the HR profession is all about. You work behind the scenes to help your employees and companies achieve excellence. You play a major role in finding talented and dedicated people and you help them develop as individuals and team members. This is an exciting time to be an HR professional. The opportunities to provide leadership in your organization have never been greater, but you must continually increase your professional knowledge and stay one step ahead of the rapid changes taking place all around you. The SHRM Foundation helps you to meet these challenges through its support of research, publications and education. The Foundation enables HR professionals like you to make a difference.

GMA SHRM News: Could You Use a Night Out?

The deadline for the renaming contest has been extended -
winner receives dinner and a movie for two!

Calling all members - GMA SHRM is sponsoring a contest to rename the HR Link newsletter! The HR Link has come a long way in the past few months. Along with that facelift, we are looking for a new name.
Need some inspiration? The mission of the HR Link is to provide GMA SHRM members with timely and relevant information, and support the National SHRM mission of serving the professional (STP) and advancing the profession (ATP).

For additional inspiration, GMA SHRM is awarding the winner a night out on the town - a gift certificate to Marcus Cinemas and dinner for two! (Couldn't you use the break?) The deadline to submit ideas has been extended to January 31, 2005. Please submit your new HR Link name to chapteradmin@gmashrm.org. The winner will be announced in the next edition of the HR Link.

Good luck, and have fun!

HR Link Guidelines

Article Writing:
Do you have an interest in writing for the HR Link? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) To share your knowledge and experiences to educate others. 2) To become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities. 3) To contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:
Because the HR Link is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers' attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:
GMA SHRM conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR Link, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR Link content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org.
