January 2005

By Belinda Weber, President Elect

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through our fiscal year! Much has been accomplished already and we are looking forward to a successful second half as well. It seems appropriate, as many of us are reflect back over our lives in 2004, that we celebrate the chapter's accomplishments in the efforts to "Serve the Profession, Advance the Profession". The following are just a few highlights of the achievements for 2004:

  • Strategic direction of the chapter has been refined to include our mission, vision, & values statement (see more under this month's board article), a change to the Board structure to offer more focus to our goals and offer more leadership opportunities for the membership, and expanded volunteer opportunities on many of our committees.
  • Chapter communications have improved to provide a more user-friendly month newsletter, HR Link, an improved website with additional resources such as a master calendar of events, self-service member profile updates, and on-line registration for programming events.
  • Membership Interaction Committee had a very successful New Member Orientation on November 11, 2004 and has incorporated networking activities into more of our programming events this year. The committee continues their outreach program with personalized "Welcome to GMA SHRM" calls to all new members.
  • Marketing has had a great year including great response to the 2004-2005 Corporate Partnership Program and the Compensation and Benefits Survey. These programs and services help make our chapter financially strong.
  • Programming continues providing a great line up of programming events scheduled for 2005 through the monthly chapter sessions, Wednesdays in the Park (WIP), and through the various Professional Emphasis Groups (PEGs).
  • Education and Development supports our value of life-long learning through their advocacy of certification and mentorship. We were excited to provide one professional and two student scholarships to support the continued pursuit of professional development in HR.
  • Student Chapter involvement in our chapter as volunteers and leaders is very high.
  • Workforce Readiness and Diversity has their Community Connections program designed and ready to be implemented in January 2005.

The numerous volunteers, committee chairpersons, and leaders can be very proud of the work that has been accomplished to support our mission, vision, and values. We could not have accomplish so much without the volunteers who have freely contributed their time and talents to make this chapter as active and rewarding as it is. We are also supported with outstanding chapter administration provided by Morgan Data Services.

As we look forward to 2005, we will continue serving your professional needs whether it is through our educational, networking, or volunteer opportunities. We encourage your involvement and support your engagement in the HR Profession and the GMA SHRM Chapter.

May you and yours have a happy, health, and prosperous 2005!
